what my life right now consists of

a picture is worth a thousand words, right?
These two pictures adequately sum up my job right now. Above, 'my' clinic at lugbeye, nearing completion. Below, mud. Specifically 'my' mobile in mud. As in, stuck in mud. That's me on the right. If you look close enough, you can see I'm laughing. You've got to have a sense of humor, right?

i got my hair cut a couple week ago...quite short. the 'barber' in sanniquellie only knows so many ways to cut hair, all of them involving blunt scissors and naked razor blades, and most of them aren't suitable for caucasian-type hair.

And I'd like to know why you - or anyone - thought you might be able to drive through that mud!

well, you know, there were three reasons we tried.
Firstly, the landcruiser is a remarkably capable vehicle. You would not believe the things I've gotten through in them.
Second, we had made it through on the way out with no problems. This was us coming back from our trip. We made it before, why not now?
Third, we didn't have a choice. There's only one way on this particular route. It's not as though there's a side road. I'm in the bush, here!
The real problem were the other two trucks stuck in the mud - big lorries. They had both gotten stuck in the two preferable routes through this particular stretch of bad road. If only one of them had been stuck, we could've used the other 'lane'. But, alas, it was not to be.
Since that picture was taken the road has gotten worse. But, a combination of partially cleared track through the bush, our landcruiser's remarkable off-road abilities (whee!), and having excellent (if fearless) drivers means we now usually just go around the worst of the mud. Right there. For now.

I had the same reaction - that couldn't be Taj, he doesn't have any hair!

Taj, what will happen to the clinic buildings when the mission is shut down??? Will another NGO take them over???

A lot of 'what happens' will depend on, well, what happens.
If we can find another NGO to hand-over to (to take the reigns on the whole project, with all that it entails) the clinics would then be under the new NGO's supervision. That's what we're hoping will happen. The other alternative, if we cannot find another NGO, will be to turn administration back over to the Ministry of Health (MoH). In fact, all the health centers are currently under the administration of the MoH...we're just supporting them with supplies and staff and the like. We would, of course, love to see that support continue from someone.

Seriously, how long did it take to get that car unstuck?! What a mess!
